Are you a Fancy Nancy fan? Are you a fan of fancy sisters? Or perhaps a fan of your own plain, but serviceable sister (JK to my sister who is lovely!)? I am a fan of all three of these things; thus, I found the sister duo behind Flower Girls to be endearing picture book makers.
Lily has a perfectly perfect garden with a structured layout and with everything in its place. Poppy’s garden is wild and free with exciting sculptures and no plan whatsoever. So when it’s Daisy, the youngest sister’s, time to get her own garden, Lilly and Poppy have ideas about what Daisy’s garden should look like. As they fall deeper into their planning, they end up splitting Daisy’s garden in half to carry out each of their own plans. Luckily, Daisy was busy with her own project the whole time and never noticed her sisters’ efforts.
Bits and Pieces: The artist used ink, watercolor, gouache, and her beloved Ricoh Afficio 150 copier machine, 1998-2024 (RIP) to create the illustrations in this book. They are bright and cheerful and absolutely perfect for the text. It seemed odd to me that Daisy was so blasé about her sisters' involvement, but I liked how calm and cool she was. She was certainly well adjusted.
Not Sure About: I was once the youngest in my family, and if either of my older siblings had tried to touch my new garden or tell me what to do, I would have socked them good. There is a chance I was not as well adjusted as young Daisy.
Favorite Part: This color palette was a dream. And Mom was SO pretty. Like way better looking than Dad. I thought Dad should get out there. If I were him, I wouldn't have liked the comparison. The illustrations were Hilary Knight-esq, so naturally I adored them. Also, Daisy’s romper had me online shopping for my niece and god-daughter fast. And don't get me started on each of the sisters' rubber boots.
