"Fridays are for Fish Frys" By Laura Sprtel

It’s here! My critique partner (and friend!) Laura’s debut picture book is finally here! Publishing takes approximately 4,918 years per book, so I have been waiting a while.

This book is a summery, fun visit to Wisconsin that introduces you to a local fish fry tradition. Follow along with Jack as he fishes with his uncle (I love an uncle/aunt book), helps prepare the fish, invites his friends and neighbors, and gathers his community around the table. Gorgeous, lush illustrations invite rereads and conversation about the importance and delight of sharing with everyone.

Bits and Pieces: Laura works in Procreate, and the extremely nice thing about her is that she is very helpful and once tried to teach me to draw perspective. Sadly, it didn’t take. I am baffled by perspective. But she did her best. Luckily, she can draw perspective and is so talented you’ll wish she’d invited you to her fish fry and also painted a picture of you.

Favorite Part: I liked the end best with everyone catching fireflies. It’s such a sweet and nostalgic nod to my own childhood.

Not Sure About: Considering I got to critique this manuscript while it was being written, obviously I don’t have any complaints.

P.S. Sprtel sounds similarly to "hotel" rather than "turtle" ( I asked)

P. P. S. As a reminder, if you aren't able to purchase a book, please request at your local library! It's an easy, free way to support an author/illustrator
