This is a new book that feels vintage, in the best way. I picked up the Bunny Ballet because I am not a silly goose who doesn’t pick up books about bunnies and ballets.
Scene: Two light skinned, waif-like children wander into a meadow that is hosting a bunny ballet! They take their seats and watch the show. Bunnies pirouette, grand jeté, twirl and leap across the bunny stage to delight of the audience. Intermission was a personal highlight for me, the snacks on offer were bunny approved, (not human approved, eww) but funny. Examples are, ‘Falfa Fizzer, Radish Razzle, Lettuce Linzer etc.. The performance continues on and children and bunnies alike are sad when it ends. But we end with the promise of another performance soon.
Bits and Pieces: The illustrations in this book were painted, cut, set up in layers, and photographed with light. I’ll say more about that soon.
Not Sure About: This is going to be controversial. And I’m scared to say it. But… this would be such a cute lil movie. I am the last person to suggest television for the children, but some part of me really wants to see these rabbits dance. They are serious dancers! I think it would be a lauded performance.
Favorite Part: I went down a rabbit hole (pun completely intended) about the illustrations and I guess all I can say is visit Elly’s website and look at her “process” tab. And then think about what you’re doing with your life. Her method is bizarre and awesome and I want to follow her around one day (not creepily) and watch her work (still in a super cool and not creepy way).
